National Conference chief and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah on Thursday said that terrorism in today’s world was "up in the sky" after he narrowly escaped an assassination attempt at a wedding event in Jammu on March 11. CCTV footage of the incident shows a gunman approaching Abdullah from behind and firing shots from a close range, though the attempt failed and he remained unharmed.

"No matter how much security you increase, the killer always has an advantage. The problem is that we live in an era where terrorism is up in the sky, and we cannot control it,” Farooq Abdullah said while addressing the media.

Farooq Abdullah rejected claims of security lapse at the event, however mentioned that police was not present at the spot.

"I don't know what his (accused Kamal) intention was. To say it was a security lapse would be a big statement to make. Many big personalities were present at this wedding, but there was no police present. By Allah's grace, my security was present with me, and my life was saved,” the former JK CM said.

Amit Shah Dials Farooq Abdullah

Farooq Abdullah further said that he received a call from Union Home Minister Amit Shah soon after the incident.

“I did get a call (from the Union Home Minister) who asked me about my well-being and assured me that they would investigate the matter. An inquiry should be done. Such things keep happening when there is a situation of hatred....No religion teaches hatred, but only to love,” he remarked.

The accused, identified as 63-year-old Kamal Singh Jamyal, was overpowered by Abdullah's security and other people around him. Jammu And Kashmir Deputy CM Surendra Choudhary was accompanying him when the firing incident took place.

Kamal Singh Jamyal, a resident of Purani Mandi in Jammu, was taken into custody. He told police that he had been waiting for an opportunity to target Farooq for the last 20 years. He was found to be in an inebriated state, officials said.
