The election for the Bharatiya Janata Party national president has been extended further as the party has pulled out another rabbit out of the hat by appointing Nitin Nabin, a Cabinet Minister in Bihar, as the National Working President.
Nabin, who assumed the charge of working president on Monday, is the second person in the party's history to hold that position, as the saffron party's constitution has no such provision. Before him, it was his predecessor and current BJP president Jagat Prakash Nadda who held this position in 2019.
Nadda, first working president
JP Nadda was named the working president in 2019 after Amit Shah, the then party president, was inducted into the Narendra Modi 2.0 Cabinet as Home Minister. In his role as working president, he assisted Shah with party duties until formally elected as full-time national president.
According to the party constitution, a president can not be reelected after two terms of three years each, and hence, the elections were unavoidable for the BJP.
Current situation
In the current situation, the BJP has completed the elections in 30 out of 47 states and UTs. As per the party's constitution, the organisational election must be completed in at least half of the states and UTs.
The party has already completed the prerequisite to move ahead with the election of the national president, but it postponed the polls and appointed Nabin as working president.
The decision is widely anticipated to follow the same pattern where Nabin would likely be inducted into the central party leadership role, assisting Nadda and learning the nitty-gritty, before formally assuming the charge of the party.
While this new tradition gives the BJP time to groom their new president, it also provides it an opportunity to make calculated choices till the last moment.
Nabin is the youngest person and the first from Bihar and Eastern India to assume top role in the BJP. his appointwant was approved by BJP's Parliamentary Board on Sunday. In a conversation with Dainik Jagran, Nabin expressed gratitude to the top leadership, including PM Modi, HM Amit Shah and others, saying that only BJP can appoint an ordinary party worker as its president.
