The police, in their preliminary investigation into the Ghaziabad teen suicide case, have found out that the family has other problems, the biggest of them being debt.
The Delhi-NCR was startled by the suicide of three teen girls on Wednesday. At around 2 am on Wednesday, they jumped from the balcony of their ninth-floor apartment.
Initially, the father of the deceased girls, Chetan Kumar, told the media that the children were playing a Korean game on mobile phones that made them do some tasks. He alleged that suicide was the last such task.
However, the police later ruled it out as a factor. The cops confirmed that the girls instead had been binge-watching Korean dramas on their parents' phones and that their influence can't be ruled out as a factor.
News agency ANI cited Nimish Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Trans-Hindon, saying the three minor girls were clearly influenced by Korean culture.
DCP Patil stated that the police have found a suicide note at the residence, which clarified that they were influenced by Korean culture. However, no specific name of any game application was mentioned in the note.
However, a trigger may have been problems because of their father's debt. According to a report by NDTV, Chetan is a stock trader and has a debt of over Rs 2 crore, the police have said. The girls did not have a mobile phone because they were sold to pay off the bills.
Chetan had also threatened to marry them off. Last week, he even stopped giving his mobile phone to the teen sisters. The cops believe the step could have offended the girls, who were deeply under the influence of the K-drama.
What did eyewitness say?
Arun Kumar, a resident of the same housing society, said that he saw the girls jump off from the building. Speaking to news agency ANI, he said it seemed like one of them planned the jump while the others were trying to save her.
"I saw all three of them jumping. It was so sudden, it occurred before I could have done anything or called anyone. They were sitting on the balcony glass... It was abnormal. It happened at around 2 AM... From what I saw, one of them planned to jump, and the others fell while trying to save her. I called the police and the ambulance..." he said.
