The government has summoned Meta's global team after the social media platform briefly restricted a Facebook post by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to sources cited by PTI, officials are set to question the social media giant on alleged algorithmic bias, the functioning of its content moderation systems, and its role in maintaining public order.

Meta's global team is expected to arrive in Delhi sometime in the middle of next week. In addition to appearing before government officials, the executives will depose before a parliamentary committee.

This development comes a day after the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) summoned a senior Meta executive after the social media giant briefly restricted a PM Modi's Facebook post addressing India's youth on exam paper leaks.

Govt To Question Meta On Algorithmic Bias, Public Order Role

According to PTI sources, the government's upcoming interaction with Meta's global team will focus heavily on whether the platform's algorithms exhibit bias, how its algorithms function, and the company's role in matters affecting public order.

Centre Rejects Meta's Explanation On PM Modi's Facebook Video

Meta had earlier attributed the temporary restriction on PM Modi's Facebook post to a 'technical glitch' and issued an apology. However, the MeitY considered the explanation "inadequate."

In response, Meta informed the ministry that posts from the Prime Minister and other high-profile accounts will be subjected to additional scrutiny across its platforms. The company also wrote to the government outlining enhanced safeguards, including multi-level reviews by senior executives before any action is taken on posts published by the Prime Minister or other high-profile accounts.

About PM Modi's Facebook Video

In the Facebook video, the Prime Minister said the government would announce tougher measures to tackle paper leaks. PM Modi had assured students that the government would take stricter measures to curb examination paper leaks, including bringing tougher legal provisions before the Union Cabinet.

He said directions had been issued to set up fast-track courts and that a draft law proposing stringent punishment and special courts for paper leak cases would be placed before the Cabinet before being introduced in Parliament.
