A 59-year-old woman died on Monday after being stabbed and her apartment was set ablaze by her mentally ill son in Gurugram. The incident took place at Vipul Greens, a high-end residential complex, where the victim, identified as Ranu Shah,  lived with her family. The attack was reportedly triggered when the woman called her son, Atrish “mad”.

After the incident, neighbours alerted authorities late last night upon noticing the fire. Despite the efforts of firefighters and police to rescue, the woman passed away due to severe burn injuries after being taken to a nearby hospital.

A preliminary investigation by the police suggests that Atrish frequently became agitated and had a history of confrontations with his mother. Police said that the altercation that led to the fatal incident occurred when the woman allegedly insulted her son while her husband was not present at the time of the attack.
