Air pollution is an escalating crisis affecting millions of lives daily. Hawa Ki Baat is an ongoing initiative of Jagran Connect, a community platform of Jagran.com, to raise awareness about air pollution and inspire collective action for cleaner air. Through real-time air quality insights, interactive polls, and myth-busting facts, we aim to empower communities to make sustainable choices. As part of this effort, leading environmental voices share their insights, offering a guide for action and change.
Avinash Kumar Chanchal – Deputy Program Director (Campaigns), Greenpeace South Asia, said, "There is no ‘safe’ level of air pollution. Even minimal exposure reduces life expectancy and increases health risks. Air pollution affects everyone, regardless of age or status."
"Temporary measures like air purifiers are mere band-aids. We need long-term solutions addressing core causes like vehicular emissions, industrial pollution, and biomass burning. Governments must enforce regulations, and citizens must adopt cleaner lifestyles. Systemic changes like promoting electric vehicles, efficient public transport, and clean energy are critical. Combating pollution is a shared responsibility," he added.
Dalip Sabharwal – Bicycle Mayor of Delhi, said, "Our cities are choking due to vehicle dependency. Cycling, walking, and using public transport are essential for reducing emissions and improving health. When you choose cycling or public transport, you actively reduce pollution and make cities safer. It’s a lifestyle change with immense long-term benefits. Governments must invest in infrastructure for cycling and walking. Until then, let’s lead by example—every avoided car trip counts."
Harjeet Singh – Climate Activist, Founding Director, Satat Sampada Climate Foundation, said, "Air pollution is a public health emergency. Millions breathe air that compromises their health. Clean air is a basic human right, and we must address pollution at its source."
"We need to transition to renewable energy and phase out fossil fuels. Communities suffering the most from pollution contribute the least to it. Climate justice is key. Governments, businesses, and citizens must act now. Systemic reforms and stricter controls are essential to protect future generations," he said.
Sandy Khanda – Founder, Green Pencil Foundation, said, "Air pollution solutions can’t be temporary. Anti-smog guns and purifiers show quick results but don’t fix the root problem. We need long-term policies prioritizing sustainability."
"Industries and construction sites must comply with air quality norms. Grassroots awareness is crucial to understanding how daily choices impact pollution. Environmental education for children is key to building a responsible future generation. Collective action and strict enforcement are the way forward," he said.
