Mumbai rain fury: Heavy rains battered Mumbai on Wednesday over the past 24 hours, causing widespread disruption to normal life across the city. Several areas continued to receive rainfall in the afternoon, leading to waterlogged roads.

During the last 24 hours, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported dozens of incidents of trees falling, short circuits, structural collapse and a landslide.

Andheri Subway closed

According to reports, Andheri Subway was inundated after a spell of heavy downpour, which caused traffic disruption. Local train services are also affected due to rainfall.

Traffic to key west suburbs and airport was heavily affected due to waterlogging. A report by Marathi Jagran stated that services on all three lines were disrupted in the morning.

Worli, Navi Mumbai, Wadala, Malad waterlogged

Severe waterlogging was seen in Worli, Navi Mumbai and Wadala, among other areas. Prathamesh Complex and Country Club Road on Andheri Veera Desai Road were also inundated after continuous rainfall. The rainwater entered the buildings and shops along the road. Traffic movement came to a standstill on Andheri Veera Desai Road and SV Road due to waterlogging.

Waterlogging was also reported on the Western Express Highway in Malad. The water accumulation slowed the vehicular movement. Apart from that, the Sion-Panvel Highway also witnessed waterlogging.

Weather forecast: Today and tomorrow

According to the latest India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast, an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places with very likely probability remains in place for today.

For Thursday, the weather department has sounded a red alert.

Two dead so far

Since the spell of rainfall started on Tuesday, two people have died in rain-related incidents. An 11-year-old student died after a tree fell on a school bus in the Chembur area on Tuesday. Three other children were injured in the incident, which took place near Diamond Garden at around 2:58 PM.

In a separate incident on Tuesday night, a part of the third-floor balcony collapsed in Walkeshwar, leaving a 51-year-old petrol pump worker injured. He was rushed to JJ Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
