In a big concern, India has reported two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Bengaluru. An eight-month-old child has tested positive for the virus, raising alarm amid surging cases in China. The child is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the city. Another case, a 3-month-old baby, has also emerged in Bengaluru. However, the patient has been discharged after treatment. As per the details, both the children do not have any travel history.
The development has been confirmed by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) through routine surveillance.
The Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) virus is also difficult to detect. In fact, its symptoms are similar to common cold, such as cough, sore throat and difficulty in breathing.
Earlier, the Karnataka Health Department said the information on the case was conveyed to the Union Health Ministry. However, it's unclear whether it is the same variant that has created havoc in China.
The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in India earlier said it was closely monitoring the respiratory infection cases and was in contact with international agencies in the wake of a spike in HMPV outbreaks in China.
“We will continue to monitor the situation closely and validate information and developments accordingly," news agency PTI quoted a senior official as saying.
What is HMPV
Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that can cause infections, particularly in young children, elderly individuals and those with weakened immune systems. It belongs to the Metapneumovirus genus of the Paramyxoviridae family. HMPV was first identified in 2001 and is a common cause of respiratory illnesses such as bronchiolitis, pneumonia and upper respiratory tract infections.

Its symptoms may include cough, fever, nasal congestion, wheezing, and shortness of breath. Severe cases can lead to hospitalisation, particularly in vulnerable populations.
