Commuters in Hyderabad may soon get a new and easier way to travel in the city as the Telangana government is planning to introduce pod taxis to improve last-mile connectivity from metro stations.

Currently, while the metro helps people travel long distances quickly, reaching offices or homes from stations can be difficult and challenging at times. Many commuters depend on autos or buses and often get stuck in traffic for hours. The proposed pod taxi system aims to solve this problem. It will do so by directly connecting metro stations to nearby business hubs and residential areas.

Hyderabad Pod Taxi: About The Project

The pod taxi project will follow the Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) model. In this, small, automated and driverless pods will run on elevated tracks. Each pod will have the capacity to carry six to eight passengers and travel at speeds of up to 40 kilometres per hour, ensuring smooth and quick movement.

How Will It Benefit Commuters?

Since the pods will run on elevated tracks, they will not be affected by road traffic. This is expected to reduce travel time and avoid congestion-related delays. These vehicles are likely to run on electricity or batteries, making them an eco-friendly transport option. At present, nearly five lakh passengers use the Hyderabad Metro daily. According to reports, the pod taxi system will be able to handle around 10,000 passengers per hour. This way, the project can make daily commuting faster, smoother and more convenient for people in the city.

Which Areas Will Be Covered In The first phase?

In the first phase, the service is expected to cover high-traffic routes such as Raidurg to Hitec City, Raidurg to Kukatpally, the Financial District, Knowledge City and areas around the Secretariat. These corridors have been selected due to heavy metro usage and strong commercial activity in nearby areas.
