Weather Update: In view of diverse weather conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued several weather alerts across the country. While the Western Himalayan region is likely to see light to moderate snowfall, heavy rainfall is expected over southern states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu towards the weekend. Additionally, dense fog will continue to affect visibility in parts of the northern and eastern plains, with isolated cold waves and severe "cold day" conditions in the northwest.
Snowfall In Jammu-Kashmir And Uttarakhand
- According to the latest IMD bulletin, isolated light to moderate rainfall or snowfall is expected over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on January 6, 2026.
- Additionally, ground frost is likely to occur in isolated pockets of Uttarakhand, which may affect local crops and early morning travel.
Heavy Rain Alert For Tamil Nadu And Kerala
- The Meteorological Department has forecast light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning for isolated areas of Tamil Nadu on January 8 and 9.
- The rainfall activity is expected to intensify towards the weekend, with heavy rainfall likely in isolated parts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Mahe on January 9 and 10, 2026.

Dense Fog Alert For THESE States
- The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast dense to very dense fog over Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh during morning hours until January 10.
- Similar conditions are expected in East Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh until January 8, while Rajasthan and Uttarakhand will also see morning fog during the same period.
- West Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh are forecast to remain foggy until January 9 and 10, respectively. Additionally, East Uttar Pradesh is likely to witness a second spell of dense fog from January 9 to 12.
- Foggy conditions are expected in Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal until January 7, with Bihar, Assam, and the remaining northeastern states continuing to see reduced visibility until January 10.
Cold Conditions Likely In Punjab, Haryana And Bihar
- The weather department has forecast cold day to severe cold day conditions in isolated pockets.
- East Rajasthan and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal are likely to experience cold day conditions on January 6 and 7, while West Rajasthan will see similar conditions during the same period.
- Isolated pockets of Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Gangetic West Bengal are expected to reel under cold day conditions today.
- The Meteorological Department has forecast cold wave conditions in isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh from January 6 to 9, West Rajasthan from January 8 to 10, East Rajasthan from January 6 to 10, Chhattisgarh from January 6 to 8, and Jharkhand from January 6 to 7, 2026.
