India Tightens AI Rules: To monitor Deepfakes, AI-generated content and curb the spread of misleading information, the government of India has notified new rules and directed social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and YouTube to clearly label AI generated contents and ensure that such materials have embedded identifiers.

The Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Amendment Rules, 2026 to come into force on 20th February, 2026

As per the news rules, creators or anyone uploading AI-generated or AI-modified content, whether photos, videos, or audios, including deepfakes, will be required to declare that the content has been created or altered through the use of artificial intelligence. Platforms such as Instagram and X will have to label AI-generated content to prevent users from being misled or deceived.
