External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar on Wednesday gave a strong-worded reaction to Pakistan's bid to mediate in the ongoing war between the US, Israel and Iran.
According to a report by Jagran.com, citing sources, Jaishankar spoke on the issue during the all-party meeting. He condemned Pakistan as a 'dalaal' (broker) nation.
Jaishankar said, "India will not act as a middleman and dalal (broker) nation like Pakistan".
Pakistan has offered to mediate between Washington and Tehran to end the ongoing war, and speculations of active backchannel diplomacy have intensified after US President Donald Trump shared a post by Pakistan's Shahbaz Sharif expressing his eagerness to facilitate a resolution.
Pakistan is acting as a messenger for the US and Iran in the ongoing war in the Middle East. Pakistan is relaying every message from the US to Iran. The EAM has targeted Pakistan over this issue.
Notably, Pakistan and Turkey have been trying to mediate for the cessation of hostilities. US President Donald Trump proposed a 15-point plan to end the war. The proposal was delivered to Iran by Pakistan.
Islamabad is looking to host both countries for negotiations. Extending an invitation, Pakistan PM Shahbaz Sharif posted on X on Tuesday evening: "Subject to concurrence by the US and Iran, Pakistan stands ready and honoured to be the host to facilitate meaningful and conclusive talks for a comprehensive settlement of the ongoing conflict."
However, Iran has rejected the proposal, calling it 'excessive' and 'inconsistent'. Tehran said, "Iran will end the war when it decides to do so and when its own conditions are met," the official said, adding that Tehran will continue its defensive operations against the United States and has vowed to deliver 'heavy blows' until its conditions are met.
Rejecting 15 points of Trump, Tehran has put forward five conditions to end the war, including a complete end to the US and Israeli 'aggression and assassinations,' safeguards against future military action, compensation for losses and damages caused by the war and recognition of Iran's sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.
