Karnataka Anganwadi News: In Karnataka’s Koppal district, two Anganwadi workers were suspended for taking eggs back from children during a midday meal, right after pictures were taken and videos were recorded. Eggs are a mandatory part of Anganwadi meals and are provided by the government.
The incident came to light when a video and photographs circulated, showing the workers, Lakshmi and Shainaja Begum, distributing eggs to the children and then forcibly retrieving them shortly after. The Women and Child Welfare Department responded by issuing a strict order, suspending the two workers and instructing all Anganwadi staff to avoid such unethical practices.
This is not the first time that the abysmal conditions of Karnataka's Anganwadis have been brought to the forefront. In a recent visit, a team of judges led by the District Sessions Judge and Chairman of the Legal Services Authority, C Chandrasekhara, inspected around 53 Anganwadis in Koppal district and were appalled by the state of affairs.
The inspections revealed a number of discrepancies, including Anganwadis reporting more children in their registers than are actually enrolled. Cleanliness was also a major issue, with many centres lacking basic facilities like doors and toilets. Additionally, first-aid kits were found in the personal residences of the workers, instead of being available on-site, according to a Deccan Herald report.

Furthermore, the team discovered that official documents were often written using pencils, as the staff had been instructed by higher-ranking officers to do so. This raises concerns about the level of oversight and accountability within the Anganwadi system.
