In a recent inter-ministerial briefing, the current state of India's energy supply and LPG distribution was outlined. While it was confirmed that domestic LPG and PNG supplies remained uninterrupted, a strategic shift is underway to address future energy challenges.
The central government has offered States and Union Territories (UTs) an additional 10 per cent allocation of commercial LPG to support small businesses and restaurant groups often hit hardest by seasonal shortages. However, this quota is tied to specific reforms aimed at transitioning from LPG to Piped Natural Gas (PNG).
The following benchmarks break down the 10 per cent additional supply:
One per cent allocation: Awarded for establishing State and District-level committees to approve City Gas Distribution (CGD) applications and handle grievances.

Two per cent allocation: Provided for issuing orders that grant "deemed" CGD permissions.
Three per cent allocation: Granted for implementing "Dig and Restore" schemes for CGD infrastructure.
Four percent allocation: Awarded for reducing annual lease or rental charges.
"The responsibility now lies with state governments to accelerate these reforms and expedite connections for domestic, commercial and industrial PNG users," stated official spokesperson Sharma.
Domestic Production And Shift To PNG
Despite a significant 40 per cent growth in domestic LPG production, the officials noted that the global energy landscape remains unpredictable. The reason why the government is urging citizens in areas with existing infrastructure to switch from LPG cylinders to PNG (Piped Natural Gas) is that it is a safer, more efficient, and more convenient alternative.

The briefing also highlighted a major consumer behavior, with 90 per cent of all LPG bookings now occurring online. The government advised citizens to avoid physical visits to agencies and rely solely on official apps and the portal to prevent the spread of misinformation.
To maintain transparency and curb black-market trading, authorities are taking strict enforcement actions. Just yesterday, 2,300 LPG retail outlets across the country underwent surprise inspections to ensure fair distribution.
Logistics and International Relations
On the logistics front, the Ministry is closely monitoring supply chains. Currently, LPG discharge is underway from the carriers Nandadevi and Shivalik, with no reported congestion at any ports.
Regarding international affairs, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that PM Modi recently spoke with the President of the UAE, condemning recent attacks in the region. Additionally, Indian citizens have been advised to strictly follow the safety advisories issued by the Indian Embassy in Tehran.
