Maharashtra: The Maharashtra government will soon launch a Marathi teaching campaign for the non-Marathi-speaking rickshaw and taxi drivers in the state. The state transport minister Pratap Sarnaik informed that learning Marathi will help the drivers to communicate well with the locals. He further stated that approximately 4,500 teachers will be appointed across the state under this scheme. The minister announced this decision during a meeting of rickshaw and taxi unions held in Mumbai.
He stated that familiarity with the Marathi language has become the need of the hour for non-Marathi-speaking drivers working within the state's public transport system. In major cities, including Mumbai, Pune, Thane, and Nashik, a large number of drivers hailing from other states are employed in the rickshaw and taxi sectors.

As per several reports, language barriers lead to communication difficulties between passengers and drivers. The government believes that this Marathi teaching initiative will prove instrumental in resolving this issue.
The appointed teachers will visit rickshaw and taxi stands, union offices, and training centers across various cities to train the drivers. The major focus will be on aspects such as daily conversation, interacting with customers, asking for directions, handling fare-related transactions, and understanding government notices.
Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has appealed the rickshaw and taxi unions to actively participate in this campaign. He stated that it would be essential to encourage drivers to undergo training, provide venues for classes, and extend cooperation to ensure the success of the campaign.

This initiative is also viewed as an attempt to establish better synergy between the Marathi language and employment opportunities. The administration believes that the training to the drivers will bolster passenger confidence and render services more accessible.
This campaign will be implemented in a phased manner. The Transport Department has announced that detailed guidelines regarding teacher recruitment, curriculum, and training programs will be issued shortly.
