Jagran Correspondent, New Delhi: Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar is once again in headlines after seven people died while several others were injured after a five-storey building collapsed in South-West Delhi’s Satya Niketann on Sunday.

The MCD has suspended the Deputy Commissioner of the South Zone, but the student organisation ABVP is demanding the resignation of the MCD Commissioner.

Sanjeev Khirwar was appointed MCD Commissioner after Ashwani Kumar was transferred to Jammu and Kashmir in January 2026. Five major accidents have been reported since his appointment as Commissioner.

-May 30: Six killed in building collapse incident in Saidulajab, adjacent to Saket.

-June 3: 23 people died in a fire at a B&B in Hauz Rani, adjacent to Malviya Nagar.

-July 8: Three people died in a building collapse in Rohini Sector-16.

-August 21: One person died during demolition of a dilapidated building in Regarpura.

-September 6: Seven people died after a five-storey building collapsed in Satya Niketan.

IAS officer Sanjeev Khirwar was surrounded by controversy in 2022 after being accused of getting Delhi's Thyagraj Stadium cleared to walk his dog.

He was then transferred from Delhi to Ladakh, where he served as Principal Secretary. After his transfer to Delhi in January 2026, he was appointed as the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) by the Centre.

The MCD Commissioner is not directly responsible for any accidents as he has delegated powers to the Deputy Commissioner to regulate all activities within the zone. Following the Satya Niketan incident, the Deputy Commissioner of the Southern Zone has been suspended, while the ABVP is adamant on demanding the resignation of the Commissioner.

On Monday, a Delhi court sent a married couple arrested in connection with the Satya Niketan building collapse to 14 days of judicial custody, while their son was remanded to two days' police custody.

Hariram Gupta, 81, and his wife, Urmila Gupta, 75, were sent to 14 days of judicial custody, while their 52-year-old son Mahesh Gupta was remanded to two days' police custody after they were produced at the judge's house.

According to police, Hariram Gupta had the building's electricity connection in his name, while his son handled its day-to-day management. The property was registered in the name of Urmila Gupta, documents revealed. The family is being probed for its role in running the PG accommodation and the renovation being carried out in the basement, a likely cause of the building's collapse.
