Jagran Correspondent, New Delhi: A massive fire at an illegal hotel in Delhi's Hauz Rani claimed the lives of 21 people, including those of 13 foreign nationals. As per the investigation, the victims could not escape the site as the fire escalated quickly and engulfed the whole building within a few minutes. However, a Nigerian couple successfully managed to survive by using the hacks they learnt from the online videos. They stated that instead of panicking, they used their presence of mind and applied whatever they had learnt through the videos.
In their statement to the Delhi police, the Nigerian couple stated that they saved their lives by hiding inside the bathroom and using water to protect themselves from toxic fumes. They further stated that the hack saved them from the dangerous flames, and they came out only when the help arrived. The couple stated that they had previously watched a video on fire safety procedures and read about fire drills.

They applied the same techniques taught in the video when the fire broke out, they informed. They rushed towards the washroom as the video had mentioned that smoke accumulates near the ceiling during a fire. They turned on the shower instead of trying to escape and waited for the help to arrive.
The toxic fumes did not harm them due to the continuous water flow and their presence on the floor of the room. The initial probe has revealed that most of the fatalities in this incident were caused by suffocation from the smoke. As per the officials, the Delhi police recorded the statement of several survivors as part of the investigation.
They further stated that translators were also present to assist in recording the statements of the foreign nationals, reported Jagran.com. The Delhi government has assured that the final probe report will be submitted soon, adding that those responsible will not be spared.
