Tension sparked between INDIA bloc allies West Bengal and Jharkhand after Mamata Banerjee ordered the sealing of Bengal's interstate border with Jharkhand, accusing Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) of releasing 5 lakh cusecs of water, which led to a flood-like situation in 11 districts of the state. Mamata Banerjee further claimed that Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren did not respond to her appeals.

CM Mamata Banerjee claimed that the main reason behind Bengal's flood-like situation is the lack of communication from DVC, which operates in both states. She said that over 26 people have lost their lives and around 2.5 lakh people are homeless because of DVC's irresponsible behaviour. "Why should Bengal always suffer? Why will DVC always try to keep Jharkhand safe? I need to protect Bengal," Banerjee said, as quoted by Times Of India.

Mamata Banerjee also wrote a letter to The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi regarding the issue. "More than 1000 sq. km of area stands affected and nearly 5 million people of the state have been drawn into the vortex of miseries for loss of crops, damages to public infrastructure & private assets, including houses, cattle," she wrote

Mamata Banerjee further declared that the West Bengal government is severing all ties with DVC and ordered a closure of borders between the two states. Following the orders, Bengal Police stopped trucks and other commercial vehicles from Jharkhand beyond the Dhanbad-West Burdwan border in Kulti. Authorities in northern Bengal districts have confirmed that non-emergency vehicles have been prohibited from entering the state.

While Mamata Banerjee claimed that the borders have been closed to save cars from being swept away by floodwater, the Jharkhand government has threatened to block all goods trucks carrying foodgrain and other commodities to Bengal.

"It's a hasty and unreasonable move by Bengal. We will block all goods trucks carrying foodgrain and other commodities to Bengal. Water levels in Jharkhand's reservoirs were nearing the danger mark due to heavy rain. In any case, an inter-state committee monitors the release of water from overflowing dams, JMM general secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya said, as quoted by the Times of India.

DVC executive director Anjani Dubey has responded to Mamata Banerjee's claims, saying that water release is reduced following heavy rainfall. Further, Jal Shakti and the power ministries assured that all the norms were followed and that both states were informed about the weather conditions and water release.

Both JMM and TMC are opposition allies, and this situation has given a chance to the BJP attack them. The Jharkhand state unit of the BJP released a statement criticising JMM and TMC. "Both of these parties have differences, but they come together just for the sake of political benefits."
