The northern part of India and most of Maharashtra and central India are waiting for the arrival of the monsoon to get relief from the sweltering weather. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy rains in some states in the next two to three days.

The weather department has issued an orange alert for Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu and Kashmir for the next 24 hours. Heavy thunderstorms and rain accompanied by hailstorms are expected in these states.

On the other hand, strong winds with speeds reaching 50 to 60 kmph, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning are likely over Rajasthan, north-western Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha and Bihar.

In Northeast India, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are also expected to receive heavy rains. These areas have already received rainfall in the last 24 hours.

In the last 24 hours, some cities of Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand witnessed thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds of 60 to 80 kilometres per hour.

No relief for UP, Delhi and Haryana; Temp drop in central India

Northwest India, including states like Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh, is likely to continue experiencing intense heat for the next three to four days, with daytime temperatures hovering around 40 degrees Celsius.

In central India, temperatures are likely to gradually drop by 2-3 degrees by June 20. Severe heat will persist in various regions of Vidarbha, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh until June 20.

The met department stated that monsoon may knock in some areas of Telangana, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Chhattisgarh in the next 4-5 days, due to which people are expected to get relief from the heat.

Rainfall in the last 24 hours

In the last 24 hours, heavy rainfall lashed Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, some areas of Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Eastern Rajasthan, Meghalaya, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana also received rainfall of around 7-11 centimetres. In Jammu and Kashmir, winds blew at speeds of 80 to 140 kmph, and hail fell in some areas.
