Jagran Representative | Indore: At least 290 road accidents were reported in Madhya Pradesh's Indore since 2023, as per a comprehensive review conducted by the Indore Traffic Police. Of the identified accident-prone zones, 10 black spots are so hazardous to an extent that even a minor lapse in judgement while crossing them can have fatal consequences. Despite ongoing efforts by local traffic authorities, the situation remains critical.
The data shows that 31 black spots were identified in the Indore district in recent years. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), a location is classified as a national highway accident black spot if it meets either of the following criteria in the last three calendar years: 5 or more fatal or grievous injury accidents have occurred in that stretch. A total of 10 or more fatalities have taken place in that stretch.
As the authorities analysed the data, it was found that Arjun Barod in the Shipra region has emerged as the district's biggest death trap. Of the 29 accidents, 19 people have died at this spot.
Worryingly, rural highways are proving more deadly than the urban roadways. Of the district's 31 black spots, 16 are in the city and 15 in rural areas. Data from the first half of 2026 (January to June) shows that while 10 deaths due to road accidents were recorded in the city, the number in rural areas was 12.
Are Road Accidents Becoming Rampant?
It's not just the passenger's negligence but also the faulty structure of the roads which is responsible for the frequent road mishaps. Faulty road design, sudden, dangerous curves, excessive pressure from heavy vehicles, inadequate traffic management, and incomplete infrastructure projects moving at a snail's pace are also key factors.
Check Top Five 'Black Spots' In The District
The top five most dangerous "black spots" in the Indore district highlight the severe toll of traffic accidents across these high-risk zones. Arjun Barod (Shipra) stands out as the deadliest location, recording 19 fatalities out of 29 accidents. This is followed closely by Bhairughat, Kalikirai (Manpur), which saw 15 deaths in 19 accidents. Both Devguradia Trenching Ground (Khudail) and Ralamandal Square remain highly critical, with each claiming 14 lives from 15 and 13 accidents, respectively. Rounding out the top five is Lavkush Square / Kailod Kartal, where 11 people lost their lives across 12 recorded accidents.

What Did The Authorities Say?
Expressing deep concern over this situation, Justice A.M. Sapre, head of the Road Safety Committee, has stated clearly that road engineering improvements or government promises alone cannot reduce accidents to zero. Unless drivers themselves become responsible, curb overspeeding, and abandon dangerous habits like wrong-side driving, it will be impossible to control these death figures. Every citizen must strictly adhere to helmet and seat belt rules.
