Navi Mumbai International Airport: The much-anticipated Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is all set to begin commercial operations on December 25, marking a historic milestone in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region's aviation landscape. With 30 flights scheduled for the opening day, the launch will make the region the first in India to operate two fully functional international airports, significantly easing congestion at the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Vile Parle.
Navi Mumbai International Airport: What’s New for Passengers?
- The airport was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 8 and is expected to significantly ease congestion at Mumbai’s existing aviation hub. NMIA will cater to passengers from Navi Mumbai as well as nearby regions such as Thane, Raigad, Pune, and parts of the Konkan belt.
- Designed with a lotus-inspired architectural theme, NMIA is being positioned as India’s first fully digital greenfield airport. It features automated, AI-enabled baggage handling systems along with real-time RFID baggage tracking in compliance with IATA 753 standards.
- The airport is also the first in the country to be planned with four-way connectivity, offering access via road, rail, metro, and water taxi services.
- For decades, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) at Vile Parle served as Mumbai’s only international airport, handling more than 50 million passengers annually while operating under capacity constraints. NMIA is expected to substantially reduce this burden.
Navi Mumbai International Airport: How To Reach NMIA Airport | Check Connectivity
- The airport will be linked to South Mumbai via the Atal Setu, also known as the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, as well as the upcoming Ulwe Coastal Road.
- Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (Atal Setu): This is the fastest route to the airport, though toll charges apply. Occasional flyers are expected to prefer this option. It is approximately 13 km from Atal Setu to NMIA.
- Vashi Bridge is a more economical alternative due to lower toll charges. Officials have indicated that toll rates may be revised as airport traffic increases. It is 16 km from Vashi Bridge to NMIA.
- Until early December, CBD Belapur was the closest railway station to the airport. Currently, Targhar railway station has become the nearest rail access point, located about 10-15 minutes from NMIA. However, train frequency remains limited.
- As per a midday report, only 12 trains run daily between Targhar and Nerul, while 13 trains operate daily towards Belapur, with intervals exceeding 30 minutes.
- Signage for taxi, auto-rickshaw, and bus stands has been installed along the airport’s approach roads. However, local drivers have reportedly flagged a lack of clarity regarding the exact locations of these stands within the airport premises.
- An official has stated that there is an initial plan to deploy around 50 electric buses for passengers and airport staff commuting from Navi Mumbai and nearby areas.
- According to an official press release, the first aircraft to land at NMIA will be IndiGo flight 6E 460 from Bengaluru at 8:00 am. This will be followed by the airport’s first departure, IndiGo flight 6E 882 to Hyderabad scheduled for 8:40 am. In addition to IndiGo, three other airlines Akasa Air, Air India Express, and Star Air will operate flights on the opening day.
