Nepal-Tibet Earthquake: Almost 95 people have been killed and 130 were left injured in the earthquake in the northern range of the Himalayas in the early hours of Tuesday. Several buildings were damaged in these areas as the US Geological Service put the quake's magnitude at 7.1, Reuters reported, citing Chinese authorities.
Though all the deaths and injuries were reported on the Tibetan side, there were no reports of deaths in Nepal and India. However, the tremor was felt in several states of India, including Delhi-NCR, Bihar, and West Bengal in the early hours of the day. The epicenter of the earthquake was located in Tingri at a depth of 10 km. Tingri is a rural region known as the northern gateway to the Everest region.
National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) said the tremors were felt in seven hill districts bordering Tibet. "We have mobilised police, security forces and local authorities to collect information," NDRRMA spokesman Dizan Bhattarai was quoted as saying by Reuters. He added that the authorities are trying to reach to the remote areas of Nepal.
The Chinese government has sent 1,500 firefighters and rescue workers to the affected areas, Reuters reported, citing China's Xinhua news agency. The report further stated that several other items, including cotton tents, cotton coats, quilts and folding beds have also been sent.
Southwestern parts of China, Nepal and northern India are frequently hit by earthquakes caused by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. Tuesday's epicentre was around 80 km north of Mount Everest, the world's highest mountain and a popular destination for climbers and trekkers.
There is a surge in incidents of earthquake in several countries of the world in recent times. While the tremors had a very big impact on Turkey, Italy also got badly affected by the earthquake in last two years. The earth is made up of several tectonic plates and the earthquake occurs when the plates collide while rotating.
