“Big journeys often begin with a small step.” This sums up the journey of Rajni Bector, an Indian industrialist who founded Mrs. Bectors Food Specialities and Cremica Group of Companies. In the 1970s, she began making homemade ice creams, cakes, cookies, and buns from her kitchen in Ludhiana, Punjab. Bector’s baking made her famous among friends and family, leading her to start a small business. Her first major investment was to buy an oven worth Rs 300, needed to churn ice cream in her own backyard.
What began as a home venture grew leaps and bounds over the years. Today, Mrs Bectors Food Specialities has become a listed company with a market capitalization worth Rs 7,890 crore.

Born In Karachi, Moved To Delhi After Partition
Born in Karachi, Rajni Bector spent her early days in Lahore. After Partition, her family moved to Delhi. Bector went to Miranda House to complete her graduation after her marriage in 1947. At the age of 17, she got married to Dharamvir Bector of Ludhiana. Driven by a passion for food, she started selling her ice cream to local farms. However, her first venture was not successful, since the making cost was much higher than the selling price, resulting in a loss for the business.
Seeing Bector’s undeterred passion for food, her husband Dharamvir supported her with Rs 20,000 to set up an ice-cream manufacturing unit in 1978. With this major investment, the business moved from the backyard to a commercial enterprise. Gradually, the venture expanded beyond ice parlors and local customers.
In 1985, Rajni set up a bread manufacturing unit in Punjab. Initially, the plant produced approximately 5,000 loaves a day, which later increased to 50,000 loaves. Soon after, the business moved from small-scale production to a larger food manufacturing business. Later, it became associated with the Cremica brand, a brand known for its biscuits and other food products. The company also developed English Oven as its bakery brand, offering bread and premium bakery products.
An Opportunity From McDonald's Changed Everything
The next major turning point came when McDonald's entered India in the 1990s. Cremica was selected to supply buns and liquid condiments to the fast-food chain. By 1996, the company was supplying buns to McDonald's. Later, the company expanded its business and started supplying bakery products to other quick-service restaurant chains, including KFC and Burger King.
Over the years, the company expanded its customer base, selling its products to more than 60 countries. In December 2020, the company got listed, adding another milestone in its kitty.
