Jagran State Bureau, Kolkata | A 49-year-old Trinamool Youth Congress functionary and his 70-year-old father were found dead at their home in Ashoknagar, North 24 Parganas, on Saturday, prompting West Bengal Police to launch a probe into the deaths.
Sanjay Raut and his father, Kamal Raut, died under suspicious circumstances. Sanjay's body was found at the home in the morning, while his father was found unconscious. Kamal was taken to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.
Sanjay, a resident of Ward No. 13 of the Ashoknagar-Kalyangarh Municipality, was found hanging in a room at his residence. Family members discovered his body from the veranda in the morning. Kamal was found unconscious in the same room. Family members took him immediately to the Ashoknagar State General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
What Preliminary Police Probe Found
Preliminary police investigations suggest that Kamal may have taken sleeping pills. A team from the Ashoknagar police station is investigating the circumstances of the deaths. Police suspect that Sanjay gave his father a sleeping pill and then took his own life. However, the exact cause of the father-son duo's deaths is subject to investigation.
Who Was Sanjay Rout?
Sanjay was the former president of the Trinamool Congress Youth Party in the Ashoknagar area. According to locals, he was also close to former MLA Narayan Goswami. Sanjay had an import-export business. A neighbour said that Sanjay was also involved in an import-export business and had been under mental stress due to a downturn in his work. He added that Sanjay was unmarried and had recently fallen into financial debt.
An officer from Ashoknagar police station said that two separate cases of unnatural death had been registered and that they were awaiting the autopsy reports. However, it is unclear whether the deaths are linked to the current political situation.
