Bengal Weather: Kolkata Braces For Heavy Rain: IMD Issues Yellow, Orange Alerts Amid Intensifying Bay System | Forecast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Kolkata on Monday and Tuesday, followed by an orange alert from September 22 to 26, forecasting heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms across West Bengal for six days. The downpour is expected to intensify as a low-pressure area over the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining North Andaman Sea develops into a depression, according to weather officials.

Downpour Expected in Purulia, Burdwan

The wetspells are likely to intensify from September 22, accompanied by heavy downpours of 7-11 cm, likely at isolated places in South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, West Midnapore and Jhargram. On September 23 and 24, the heavy-rain belt is expected to expand to districts including Murshidabad, Birbhum, West Burdwan and Purulia.

Heavy rain is predicted to continue at isolated places in several districts through September 26. South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore could also see thunderstorms and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph.

Rain To Intensify In Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Jalpaiguri

The weather department said rainfall is likely to increase in parts of North Bengal from September 22. Intense rainfall is likely to lash in parts of Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling on September 23 and 24. On September 25, Jalpaiguri could receive heavy to very heavy rain of 7-20cm, while heavy rain is likely in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar and North Dinajpur.

The system is also expected to make conditions rough at sea. Gusty winds of 45-55 kmph, blowing to 65 kmph, are likely over the east-central Bay of Bengal adjoining the northeast Bay of Bengal on September 21. Winds could strengthen to 50-60 kmph, gusting to 70 kmph, over the central Bay and 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, over adjoining areas of the north Bay of Bengal on September 22.

The wind speed is expected to intensify further, reaching 55-65 kmph, gusting to 75 kmph, over the westcentral Bay of Bengal adjoining the northwest Bay of Bengal on September 23 and remain so until the evening of September 24. Gradually, winds of 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, are likely along and off the West Bengal coast from September 23 to 25.
