Heavy rain affected several parts of West Bengal on Saturday, with Kolkata among the areas witnessing waterlogging and traffic slowdowns. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted continued rainfall across parts of the state, with North Bengal likely to see heavy showers through September 13.
The weather has intensified since Friday due to a low-pressure system over the North Bay of Bengal and neighbouring Bangladesh, which has since shifted towards the North Bay of Bengal, bringing increased moisture and rainfall to West Bengal.
Kolkata Sees Heavy Spells of Rain
Kolkata experienced intermittent light to moderate rain during the day, along with thunderstorms and strong winds in some areas. According to the IMD, wind speeds may touch 30-40 kmph at isolated locations.
The city received 45.3 mm of rain in the 24-hour period preceding Saturday. Intense spells in several parts of Kolkata resulted in water accumulation on roads and contributed to traffic disruptions.
Weather conditions are expected to ease gradually from Sunday, with a reduction in rainfall intensity likely across the state.
North Bengal Under Rain Alert
The IMD has warned of heavy rainfall in several districts of North Bengal. Kalimpong and Jalpaiguri are expected to receive heavy showers on Saturday, while Cooch Behar and Alipurduar could witness heavy rain on Sunday.
People living in low-lying and waterlogging-prone areas have been urged to exercise caution and remain alert to possible disruptions caused by the weather.
Authorities are keeping a close watch on the developing weather system as it moves over the Bay of Bengal. While rainfall activity is expected to weaken from Sunday, some areas could continue to receive heavy showers.
