Andhra Pradesh: What began as a family dispute over a Bengaluru residence between YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and his sister, Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president YS Sharmila, has quickly escalated into a political battle in Andhra Pradesh.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu escalated the dispute on Saturday, accusing the former chief minister of acting like "Kansa Mama" and saying that Reddy "has failed as Chief Minister, party leader, son, brother, and even as a citizen". This comes after Reddy denied Sharmila permission to hold her daughter Anjili's wedding at the Yelahanka Palace, Bengaluru, citing security concerns.

Chandrababu Naidu Questions Jagan Reddy

Chief Minister Naidu stated that late Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy had divided the 20-acre Yelahanka property between his son and daughter. Naidu pointed out that invitation cards had already been printed and wedding preparations were nearly complete before Jagan pulled the plug.

Dismissing Jagan's security concerns, Naidu said, "The people surrounding him made up a story about security... Rajasekhara Reddy faced a far greater security threat and still held weddings in that very same house. My effort is to explain how dangerous and risky a person's mindset is becoming for the state."

Naidu added that "family relationships should not be sacrificed over property disputes" and urged the public to recognise the motive behind such conduct.

Reddy Letter To Sharmila

In an October 9 letter released by the YSRCP on Saturday, Jagan wrote to Sharmila, addressing her as "Dear Sharmi", to explain why he denied her daughter Anjili's wedding at his Bengaluru residence.

While offering warm wishes, Jagan wrote, "Despite all that has happened over the past seven years, I sincerely wish her a lifetime of happiness and love... But a wedding brings catering teams, florists, decorators, event managers, photographers, and guests—most of whom are unknown to us. Circulation of photos and videos of these premises poses a serious security risk."

Reddy added, "Even if it were for Harsha or Varsha, I would have done the same... At the end of the day, this is my home, and I want to ensure that my family and I are safe here."

He expressed disappointment that Sharmila went ahead with invitations despite objections he had passed through various people.

Reddy urged Sharmila to choose a convention centre or destination wedding venue, similar to the location used for her son Raja's wedding, and said that his Lotus Pond residence in Hyderabad remains open to her.

The Wedding

Anjili Reddy is engaged to Dr Somala Raghuram Reddy. The wedding will take place on November 25, with a reception in Hyderabad on December 5. Sharmila has personally invited several prominent celebrities to the wedding. The guest list includes the Chief Ministers of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Telangana, the Gandhi family of the Congress party, several prominent politicians, big businessmen and celebrities.
