Delhi Racism Case: A massive row erupted after a video went viral showing a Delhi-based content creator harassing and passing racial slurs against a young man from Tripura. While reacting to the video, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju directed the authorities to take solid action against the creator. However, this is not an isolated case, as the people from the Northeast have faced similar situations in the northern states, especially in Delhi.
Major Cases In Past 12 Months:
- Amir Shokeen video row: A massive row erupted after Shokeen's old video went viral, in which the creator was seen passing derogatory remarks against a youth from Tripura. While the creator has issued an apology, the Tripura Police have filed a complaint. Apart from this, several groups from the northeast, along with Minister Kiren Rijiju, have sought strict action.
- Vikram Singh murder case: A 55-year-old musician and singer from Manipur was brutally killed by a group of men in Delhi's Ashram region following a dispute over loud noise. The issue was highlighted by several prominent politicians, including Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. The Delhi Police registered an FIR and arrested eight individuals, including food delivery workers.
- Arun Rimo assault case: Following an argument, Arun Rimo, a youth from Arunachal Pradesh, was brutally assaulted by a group of men in Delhi's Karol Bagh region. As per the reports, Rimo was assaulted for objecting to the racial slurs.
- Malviya Nagar racial abuse: Three young women from Arunachal Pradesh accused neighbors in Delhi's Malviya Nagar of physical assault and racial abuse. They alleged that the remarks were not personal but a direct attack on the appearance of Northeastern people.
While the leaders from across parties have criticized these incidents and have sought solid action, the people from the Northeast continue to face discrimination in Delhi due to their appearance.
