31-year-old Yuvraj Singh Manchanda went with his sisters in Lajpat Nagar to buy a wedding sherwani and then visited a restaurant for having lunch on September 6. Singh then asked his siblings to return home, as he planned to meet a friend in Gurugram. The Delhi man said he would be back at around 10 pm.

Singh did not return; when the family tried to contact him, he was reachable but remained unanswered. Two days later, on September 8 at around 4:16 pm, they received their last WhatsApp message from Yuvraj, following which his phone went off again. On September 11, Yuvraj's family filed a missing person report at the Lajpat Nagar police station.

Gurugram Police Cremated Unidentified Body

Meanwhile, the Gurugram Police found Singh's body and labelled it as unidentified. On September 14, the cops had cremated the body, two days before Singh’s family discovered the death.

Following this, the victim’s family alleged that the Gurugram police did not inform them, nor was the information for identification uploaded on the Zonal Integrated Police Network (ZIPNET – a government portal to check unidentified bodies) in time.

The Investigation

During the investigation, it was revealed that Yuvraj had a last phone call with a woman named Anya Vats – his former colleague – whom he had gone to meet in Gurugram. Her phone was switched off, prompting police to analyse CCTV footage and technical data and conduct enquiries at the offices of Yuvraj and the suspect. Vats then emerged as a prime suspect.

Police then detected a new mobile number being used by her. The cops then arrested her from Uttarakhand.

Another suspect, identified as Sanyam Sachdeva, who is Vats' partner, was also arrested.

During interrogation, the two accused allegedly disclosed that they had murdered Yuvraj and disposed of his body in a drain near their house in Gurugram.A detailed investigation said that Vats and Manchanda previously worked at the same realty group but were removed in 2022 due to alleged financial irregularities. Manchanda got a job at another major realty firm as an HR manager, but Vats did not.

Vats and Sachdeva are reportedly unemployed currently. The two have a one-year-old too.

How did they carried out the crime?

During the interrogation, she called Manchanda and invited him to Gurugram. Then, an argument broke out inside Manchanda's car, following which he was allegedly murdered. She claimed that she shot Manchanda dead and, with the help of her partner, disposed of the body.

Vats said that she kept the body in the car for over six hours after the murder, dumped it in the plot filled with sewer water and fled. The murder weapon was also recovered.” Police said they are questioning the suspects to ascertain the motive for the murder. Both of them were produced in court and sent to five days of police custody.
