Delhi Police Protest: A day after some police officials protested outside Delhi Police Headquarters, ACP Manasvi Vashishta, who led the demonstration, has been suspended. The strict action against Vashishta has reportedly been taken for breaching the laws and allegedly raising slogans against the senior officials. Earlier on Monday, some officials, including Vshishta, who was recently transferred, gathered seeking a meeting with Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar. The officials were upset over the face-offs with the lawyers in Shahdara.
What Escalated The Row?
Earlier, the lawyers in Shahdara staged a massive protest and threatened for an indefinite demonstration while accusing Vashista of threatening them. They alleged that rules were not being followed in handling of an assault case of a lawyer. The authorities, following the complaints, transferred ACP Vashishta and Arun Kumar to maintain the law and order in the eastern regions.
The situation escalated after lawyers accused ACP Manasvi Vashistha of misbehaving with them and threatening them by displaying his revolver. The police, however, alleged that a group of 15–20 lawyers created a ruckus inside the SHO's office, misbehaved with officers and obstructed government work.
What Officials Demanded?
During the demonstration, the officials accused the lawyers of creating ruckus and interfering in the probe. They also raised slogans, demanding a meeting with Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar. The protesters also demanded a clear guideline to deal with such cases, adding that police officials were not able to protect themselves.
"Our demands are clear. We need to meet CP sir. There needs to be an SOP (standard operating procedure) to deal with such matters. If this happens to us, how will we fight to save the people of the city," Vashishta said.
According to Jagran.com, police personnel from various districts continued to arrive at the headquarters. Senior officials were reportedly struggling to handle the situation. During the protest, several personnel expressed their anger against the lawyers. A large number of women police personnel also joined the demonstration as the day progressed.
