The family of a woman who died after falling from the roof of her matrimonial home in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad has alleged that she was facing torture and harassment over dowry demands.
The woman fell from the roof on September 7 and succumbed to her injuries two days later at a hospital. The deceased, identified as Akriti, had entered into a love marriage with a man named Gaurav in March this year, six months before the tragic incident.
Based on allegations by her brother Prabhat, an FIR was lodged against the accused, and Gaurav was arrested. The family has alleged that Akriti was facing repeated pressure for Rs 30 lakh and a Scorpio-N SUV.
Akriti and Gaurav had registered their marriage at the Ghaziabad Registrar's office on March 23 this year. Soon after that, the dispute started as Gaurav, his parents Ramesh and Saroj, and his sister started demanding an additional vehicle.

According to Akriti's family, Gaurav used to demand cash to repay a loan. He started torturing Akriti and subjected her to mental harassment after his demands were not met.
The family claimed that Akriti had secretly informed them about the alleged abuse. On the fateful day, the family alleged that Akriti had called them and told them that Gaurav, his parents and her sister-in-law were assaulting her and trying to kill her.
The call got disconnected thereafter. Later, Gaurav called her family and informed them about the incident. The Muradnagar Police have registered a case against Gaurav and her in-laws. On Saturday, the police arrested Gaurav.
In a post on X, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rural) said, "Based on the received written complaint in the aforementioned case, an FIR has been registered at Muradnagar Police Station under relevant sections, and the accused (the deceased’s husband) has been arrested. Further legal proceedings are underway."

According to a report by India Today, Gaurav admitted to demanding Rs 30 lakh, the aforementioned SUV and harassing Akriti during interrogation.
The police said that further investigation in the case was underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding Akriti's death. Further action will be taken after the post-mortem report, the cops added.
