Two weeks after a speeding Mini Cooper killed three youngsters, another similar incident has been reported from Kerala's Kochi, where a 55-year-old man was killed after a Mercedes-Benz, allegedly driven by a judge's 17-year-old son, hit his scooter during the wee hours on Sunday.
The incident took place at around 2-3 AM at Cheranalloor. The deceased has been identified as Jayabalakrishnan, a native of Manjali. The car was registered in the name of an Additional District Judge.
According to news agency ANI, preliminary reports suggest that the 17-year-old was not under the influence of alcohol. However, his blood samples were collected and sent for further analysis.
Cheranalloor Police said that a case has been registered on charges of reckless driving and causing death by negligence.
A video of the incident has also surfaced on social media, showing the car bonnet mangled and the scooter, damaged, lying on the side. The car rammed into the scooter from behind.
The deceased's niece told the media that her uncle ran a food stall to make ends meet and was returning home from work early Sunday morning when the accident occurred.
The family alleges that the car was speeding, as the impact was so severe that the scooter was completely shattered and all its belongings scattered across the road. Their uncle died on the spot.
The family members of the deceased alleged that when they reached the police station and questioned the judge as to why he had allowed his minor son to drive, the judge allegedly spoke to them in an insulting tone.
The victim's family took a firm stand, stating that they would pursue this matter legally, especially given the judge's attitude. This entire incident should serve as a lesson to everyone not to drive without a license.
