In a major development, Ujjain's Mahakal temple administration has started preparations to implement a VIP darshan-like slot booking facility for all devotees. The implementation will be on a pilot basis.
As part of the plan, the committee will designate slots for general visitors during the least crowded times. The new facility will allow devotees to enter the temple through a shorter route, rather than the usual long queues, providing a convenient darshan.
What's behind the plan?
The temple administration is planning to provide convenience to devotees along with boosting the flow of pilgrims on normal days to boost Ujjain's economy year-round. If the plan is successful, the temple committee will consider implementing it permanently.
The temple administration also aims to generate more revenue from tourism with the plan. Increased pilgrimage at Mahakal Temple will boost business related to accommodation, dining, along with footfall at other religious sites in Ujjain.

How and when to apply?
Similar to the booking for VIP darshans, devotees will be able to book slots for themselves through the official website. The window for booking will open once the temple's IT department drafts a plan and identifies the periods with low footfall.
The slots will be created by identifying periods when the number of visitors is relatively low. At present, except for Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, the number of visitors is relatively low on all days of the week.
Similarly, there are several major fasts and festivals during the year, including Dussehra and the five days of Diwali, when despite the holidays, the number of visitors to the Mahakal Temple remains low.
This arrangement is considered important in encouraging more devotees to visit Ujjain during such times.
