The Mysuru Police's alleged order to the organisers of the Lord Ganesha procession has sparked a fresh row, drawing criticism from the Opposition.

The police have allegedly asked the organisers to take out the procession so that it does not pass by a mosque.

Moreover, the direction also calls on organisers not to burst firecrackers on the procession route. A cop's video from Mysuru's T Narasipur neighbourhood has gone viral on social media, where he could be heard telling the organisers that it was a "sensitive matter". He warned that he would "deal with it" if the direction is not followed.

"You must not take that route. A festival must be like a festival that makes others respect you. But you will all go and burst crackers in front of the masjid. If I see it this time, I will deal with it," the policeman said.

Reacting to the video, Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka assembly R Ashoka accused the ruling Congress government of "harassing" people across the state over the celebration of Ganeshotsava.

While talking to reporters, he alleged the police were imposing restrictions on the procession instead of taking action against those who create disturbances.

"If Hindus are being told that they cannot openly and devotionally celebrate Ganeshotsava in their own country, what should we tell this government? Don't burst crackers, don't blow conch shells, don't speak - what kind of justice is this?" Ashoka said while demanding the suspension of the cop from Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.

Ashoka further added that similar restrictions have been imposed in Maddur and Kolar.

"This is not just a Mysuru issue; this is happening across Karnataka. Police officers are calling Ganesha Chaturthi organisers and threatening them... This shows that the Karnataka government is a Taliban government, a one-sided government," the BJP leader added.

Calling Shivakumar an 'election-time Hindu', Ashoka said that he would go to T Narasipur for justice.
