A distressing incident has unfolded in Pune, where a 33-year-old woman working as an IT engineer died by suicide after allegedly facing pressure from her in-laws since her marriage to hand over her entire salary, purchase a flat worth Rs 1 crore for her father-in-law, and fulfil other demands.

The woman has been identified as Trishna Rahul Sakpal, who married Rahul Sakpal in 2018, according to a police complaint filed by her father, Balkrishna Nikam.

A suicide note has reportedly been recovered, in which Trishna held her husband and four other family members responsible for her death. Police have registered a case against the five accused.

According to the complaint filed by her father, Balkrishna Nikam, Trishna married Rahul Sakpal in 2018. Nikam alleged that demands for money and property began after the marriage, with Trishna being pressured to hand over her entire salary and fulfil the family's financial demands.

He further alleged that she was subjected to physical abuse, forcing her to leave her matrimonial home and return to her parents' residence in 2021. Her husband subsequently filed for divorce, reportedly with plans to remarry. The divorce proceedings are still pending in court.

Trishna died by suicide at her home on September 29.

In the suicide note recovered by the police, she held her husband, Rahul, mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister-in-law and paternal grandmother-in-law responsible for her death.

Another Dowry Harassment Case Reported in Pune

The incident comes amid other reported cases of alleged dowry harassment in Pune. Last month, 23-year-old IT professional Vaishnavi Pravin Jarande died by suicide around four months after her marriage.

Her family accused her husband, Omkar Sanjay Ghisare, and her in-laws of mentally and physically harassing her over dowry and demanding an additional Rs 5 lakh to purchase a car.

According to the complaint, Vaishnavi's family had spent approximately Rs 45 lakh on the wedding and given 10 tolas of gold, equivalent to around 116 grams. However, her family alleged that her husband and in-laws continued to demand an additional Rs 5 lakh for a car despite the substantial wedding expenses and gifts.

The complaint further stated that Vaishnavi called her mother on the night of September 24 and spoke about the alleged harassment she was experiencing at her matrimonial home. At around 11:30 pm that night, her husband also contacted her family by phone.

When her family members were subsequently unable to reach her, her parents travelled to Pune. Upon arriving in the city, they learnt that Vaishnavi had died at her residence.

Police registered a case against her husband and his parents in connection with the alleged dowry harassment.
