Punjab Congress Infighting: Days after stepping down from the post of Punjab Congress chief, Amarinder Raja Warring on Friday met senior leader Rahul Gandhi at his residence in Delhi. While the exact reason behind this meeting was not disclosed, the two leaders reportedly discussed the appointment of the next state chief. Earlier on Wednesday, Raja Warring resigned from his post after several senior party leaders objected to his working style ahead of the crucial assembly polls.
Raja Warring Meets Rahul Gandhi
In the high-profile meeting with Rahul Gandhi, Warring reportedly discussed the current situation and the roadmap for the coming assembly election. Ahead of the meeting, Warring told reporters that he has always been honest and straightforward with Gandhi. "I am going to meet the boss. I have always said what's in my heart to Rahul ji," he was quoted as saying by the news agency ANI.
Along with Gandhi, Warring also reportedly met with other senior leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge and KC Venugopal.
What Led To His Resignation?
Earlier in July, the then Congress state in charge of Punjab Bhupesh Baghel, had read a message allegedly from the high command- there is no question of Raja Warring's removal. However, within months, both Baghel and Raja Warring were asked to resign from their posts.
Sachin Pilot, the new state in charge, after taking feedback from the senior leaders across the factions, reportedly suggested the removal of Warring to ensure unity. The internal crisis emerged when senior leaders, including Charanjit Singh Channi and Sukhjinder Randhawa, publicly criticized Warring for his decisions.
The assembly election in Punjab is scheduled to be held in the early months of 2027, with Congress trying to make a comeback after facing a humiliating defeat in the previous 2022 polls. The party has tried to avoid the internal rifts by asking Warring to resign with a few months remaining in the polls.
