Thane Water Cut: Residents in parts of Thane will face a 36-hour water supply disruption starting at midnight on Thursday, October 22. The shutdown will affect areas under the Diva, Mumbra and Kalwa ward committees, as well as select localities under the Wagle and Majiwada-Manpada ward committees.

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) announced the suspension on Wednesday, citing a shutdown at the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation’s (MIDC) Jambhul Water Treatment Plant.

MIDC supplies water to parts of the Mumbra, Diva, Kalwa, Majiwada-Manpada and Wagle ward committee areas within the Thane Municipal Corporation limits.

According to the civic body, below-average post-monsoon rainfall, the impact of El Nino and the early withdrawal of the monsoon in October 2026 have raised concerns over water availability. In accordance with a government order, a 10 per cent water cut has been decided to conserve available reserves.

Accordingly, water supply from MIDC’s Jambhul Water Treatment Plant will remain suspended for 36 hours, from midnight on Thursday to Saturday 12 PM (October 24).

Which Areas in Thane Will Be Affected?

During the 36-hour shutdown, water supply will be completely suspended in all areas under the Diva and Kalwa ward committees and most areas under the Mumbra ward committee, excluding parts of Ward Nos. 26 and 31.

The disruption will also affect the following localities:

- Wagle ward committee: Rupadevi Pada, Kisan Nagar No. 2 and Nehru Nagar.

- Majiwada-Manpada ward committee: Kolshet Khalcha Gaon.

Residents may also experience low water pressure for one to two days after the water supply is restored.

The Thane Municipal Corporation has urged residents to use water sparingly during the shutdown and cooperate with the civic administration.

According to the announcement, water supply will be suspended for 18 hours every week in areas dependent on the STEM Water Distribution and Infrastructure Company and for 36 hours in areas supplied by MIDC.

Mumbai Faces Water Supply Concerns Amid Rainfall Deficit

Mumbai is also facing concerns over water availability. According to an NDTV report, the city requires approximately 4,600 million litres of water per day (MLD) but receives around 4,100 MLD.

One of the major challenges is water loss through leakage and theft. Approximately 1,394 MLD, or 34% of the city's water supply, is reportedly lost through these channels. Mumbai's pipeline network stretches nearly 6,000 km, with much of the infrastructure dating back several decades.

Maharashtra relies on seven lakes to meet Mumbai's water requirements which are Tulsi, Vihar, Bhatsa, Tansa, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna and Middle Vaitarna. These reservoirs collect water during the monsoon, which is then transported through the pipeline network to homes and businesses.

With below-average rainfall and higher temperatures accelerating evaporation, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has implemented water conservation measures to ensure that available stocks last until September 2027.
