Thane Water Cut: The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) on Monday announced a weekly 24-hour water supply shutdown across several major parts of the city every Wednesday.

The decision follows Maharashtra state government directives mandating a 10 per cent water cut to preserve reservoir levels and mitigate potential drought conditions linked to the El Niño. To achieve this required 10 per cent reduction, the civic body will shut down the supply every Wednesday from 9:00 AM until Thursday at 9:00 AM.

Mumbai Faces Water Supply Concerns Amid Rainfall Deficit

Mumbai is facing concerns over water availability. According to an NDTV report, the city requires approximately 4,600 million litres of water per day (MLD) but receives around 4,100 MLD.

One of the major challenges is water loss through leakage and theft. Approximately 1,394 MLD, or 34 per cent of the city's water supply, is reportedly lost through these channels. Mumbai's pipeline network stretches nearly 6,000 km, with much of the infrastructure dating back several decades.

Maharashtra relies on seven lakes to meet Mumbai's water requirements, which are Tulsi, Vihar, Bhatsa, Tansa, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna and Middle Vaitarna. These reservoirs collect water during the monsoon, which is then transported through the pipeline network to homes and businesses.

With below-average rainfall and higher temperatures accelerating evaporation, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has implemented water conservation measures to ensure that available stocks last until September 2027.
