What Is A Uniform Civil Code (UCC)?

The Uniform Civil Code aims to bring every Indian citizen under the same set of personal laws, regardless of their religion, gender, or social background. Under this, there would be common rules for marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance, succession, guardianship, and the registration of live-in relationships. These would replace the different personal laws that various religious communities follow at present. The idea is rooted in Article 44 of the Constitution, which is part of the Directive Principles of State Policy and asks the government to work towards a common civil code for the whole country.

Which States Have Implemented/Passed A UCC?

Although a Uniform Civil Code has not been brought in for the whole country yet, individual states have the power to legislate on personal laws. Currently, these states enjoy a UCC status.

- Uttarakhand (first and only state to implement a UCC actively. It came into force on January 27, 2025).

- Gujarat (passed UCC bill on March 2026).

- Assam (third state to pass UCC bill in May 2026).

- Madhya Pradesh (passed the bill in July 2026).

- Goa
