Heavy rain is expected to continue across several parts of India on Sunday, September 27, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing warnings for intense rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds. Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR and Madhya Pradesh are among the key regions under the weather watch.

The weather activity is linked to a depression moving across Uttar Pradesh, a western disturbance affecting the northern region and the gradual withdrawal of the southwest monsoon.

Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand is likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places, with extremely heavy rain also possible at some locations on September 27.

The IMD has also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph at isolated places. A moderate flash-flood risk has been identified over several watersheds and neighbourhoods in the state, raising the possibility of sudden flooding in vulnerable areas.

Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh is also likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places. The IMD has predicted thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph in parts of Himachal Pradesh.

Heavy rains and the terrain could result in increased flash flooding and disruption to sensitive locations.

Uttar Pradesh

The ongoing weather system across the state will continue to keep Uttar Pradesh wet on Sunday.

West Uttar Pradesh may experience intense to very intense spells of rain at isolated spots. There are also chances of heavy rain at isolated locations over East Uttar Pradesh. Thunderstorms with gusty winds of 40-50kmph may also hit over West Uttar Pradesh.

Delhi-NCR And Haryana

On September 27, Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh could witness isolated heavy rainfall.

IMD has further predicted thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph at isolated places. The warning is for the entire extended Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi area.

Madhya Pradesh

Intense rainfall is also predicted for Madhya Pradesh with thundershowers and lightning.

The depression formed over northeast Madhya Pradesh has moved towards Uttar Pradesh, which continues to stay linked to the weather system. According to the IMD, heavy rain with thunderstorm activity is very likely over East Madhya Pradesh and West Madhya Pradesh today.

Punjab And Jammu-Kashmir

Punjab may also experience heavy rain and thunderstorms, while Jammu and Kashmir could see thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds.

The IMD has forecast winds of around 40-50 kmph at isolated places over parts of the northern region.

Depression Moving Across Uttar Pradesh

A depression traced from northeast Madhya Pradesh to southeast Uttar Pradesh has sustained the existing spell of rainfall. The system is likely to sustain movement in a north-northwest direction across East Uttar Pradesh and weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area.

The circulation and associated moisture of the system are expected to result in rain, even though the system weakens, over some areas of north and central India.

Western Disturbance Also Active

A western disturbance is another factor behind the unsettled conditions over northern India. The IMD has said a trough associated with the system is persisting in the middle and upper levels of the atmosphere.

The interaction between the weakening depression and the western disturbance is contributing to rainfall and thunderstorm activity across the northern belt.

Monsoon Withdrawal Continues

The rain comes as the southwest monsoon continues its gradual withdrawal from the country.

As of September 26, the withdrawal line had moved through Gurdaspur, Chandigarh, Muzaffarnagar, Aligarh, Dholpur, Udaipur, Deesa and Naliya before reaching the Arabian Sea. Despite the withdrawal, weather systems can continue to trigger heavy rainfall during the transition period.
