Rain Delays Monsoon Retreat From India, Full Withdrawal Likely By This Date; What To Expect From Oct Weather

Weather Update: The withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon may see a pause as another spell of widespread rain is expected across central, eastern and northern India. The monsoon has already withdrawn from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, most parts of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. However, further withdrawal is likely to remain on hold for about a week as rain-producing weather systems remain active.

Rain To Continue Across Several States

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), the deep depression that crossed the Odisha coast has moved inland and is expected to weaken as it travels across Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Over the next four days, heavy rain is likely over Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Telangana, and West Bengal may also see rain and thundershowers.

IMD Forecast For October First Week

As per IMD's extended-range outlook, conditions are expected to become favourable for the withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon from the remaining parts of northwest India, central India and east India during the first week of October. An active Western Disturbance is also likely to affect northwest India at that time.

During the week (October 1-7), light to moderate rainfall is likely over many parts of the Western Himalayan region. Rain is also expected over the Northeast, East, central and peninsular India. The IMD outlook further indicates that conditions would become favourable for further withdrawal from northwest, south interior Karnataka and Kerala.

The overall rainfall outlook for the country during the first week of October is below normal. However, some regions are likely to continue receiving spells of rain, including the Northeast, East, and Western Himalayan region.

When Will Monsoon Finally Withdraw?

According to the IMD, the final withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon is expected only after October 1, when the circulation pattern changes from the prevailing southwesterly wind regime.
