The government issued an advisory for Indian Maritime Stakeholders on Thursday asking them to not deploy Indian seafarers on vessels undertaking voyages involving passage through the Strait of Hormuz amid evolving security situation in the region.
"In view of the heightened security situation in the Gulf region, the Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA), through DGMA Circular No. 36 of 2026, has directed Ship Owners, Ship Managers and RPSL Companies to avoid deploying Indian seafarers on vessels undertaking voyages through the Strait of Hormuz until further orders," Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India posted on X.
As per the precautionary measures:
-There will be heightened security vigilance in the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz and adjoining waters.
-There will be continuous monitoring of navigational warnings and security advisories, with strict implementation of the ISPS Code.
-There will be immediate reporting and assistance through the IFC-IOR and DG Communication Centre (MMDAC) in case of emergencies.
News agency Reuters, citing its industry sources, stated that several shipping companies are not taking the US military-guided transit scheme through the Strait of Hormuz. This decision came following a series of Iranian attacks on ships.

An Indian national who went missing after an attack on commercial vessel GFS Galaxy off the coast of Oman is dead, his father-in-law said on Wednesday. Heramb Karmarkar, 30, hailing from Maharashtra's Pune, was a marine engineer on the Cyprus-flagged container ship that was attacked off the coast of Oman on Sunday.
Karmarkar is the second Indian seafarer to be killed in the region in three days. Another Indian seafarer was killed on Tuesday after two vessels were attacked while transiting the Strait of Hormuz. According to a report by Dainik Jagran correspondent, the deceased man was identified as Sonu Kumar Gupta, a resident of Bihar's Gopalganj.
Iran's Response To Attack On Vessels
While responding to the latest attacks on commerical vessels, Tehran claimed the vessels had ignored repeated warnings, switched off their navigation systems, and attempted to sail through what it described as a "mined route" despite clear instructions from its forces.
India Lodges Strong Protest Over Attacks In Hormuz
The Ministry of External Affairs summoned Iranian diplomats including Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM) Mohammad Javad Hosseini on Tuesday. Iran deputy ambassador has been called as the Ambassador is currently not present in Delhi. Meanwhile, Tehran said it has again closed the Strait of Hormuz after hostilities with Washington reignited last week, but US President Donald Trump said the waterway is open to all shipping traffic except that of Iran.
