Parliament Monsoon Session Update Live: INDIA Bloc Writes To Om Birla Demanding Discussion On Bihar Voter List Revision

Several member parties of the INDIA bloc, including Congress, DMK, SP, TMC, NCP, Shiv Sena (UBT), RJD, and RSP, have written to the Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla, demanding a discussion on the revision of the Bihar voter list. 

As day 10 of the Monsoon session began, the opposition MPs started protesting against the revision in the Bihar electoral roll, demanding the suspension of Houses. Multiple adjournments and Rule 267 notices have been submitted in both Houses over the Bihar SIR. 

"Government is examining the impact of the recent events. We will take all necessary steps to safeguard our national interest. Government is examining the impact of the recent events. Ministry of Commerce and Industry is holding talks with exporters, industries and all stakeholders and gathering information on their assessment of this issue. Government gives utmost priority to the safeguarding of welfare of farmers, labourers, entrepreneurs, industrialists, exporters, MSMEs and stakeholders of the industrial sector. We will take all necessary steps to safeguard our national interest," Piyush Goyal said.

"On 2nd April 2025, the US President issued an executive order on reciprocal tariffs. 10% baseline duty in effect since 5th April 2025. With a 10% baseline tariff, a total of 26% tariff was announced for India. Full country-specific additional tariff was scheduled to come into effect on 9th April 2025. But on 10th April 2025 this was extended initially for 90 days and then extended till 1st August 2025," Piyush Goyal said.

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday addressed the Lok Sabha on the reciprocal tariffs imposed by the US on all Indian imports. US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced that all Indian imports to the US will now attract 25 per cent tariff. He also announced penalties on India for buying oil and gas from Russia. 

"Trump is not a conventional politician. Normal protocols of diplomacy and normal rules of intergovernmental relationships don't work. He is very unorthodox. We should just let him be as it is... We should not panic immediately. These are all opening positions in a negotiation. I hope the government maintains its cool, continues to negotiate and comes to an understanding with the US," said Congress MP Karti Chidambaram on US President Donald Trump’s announcement of imposing a 25 per cent tariff on Indian products.

Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 12 noon on Thursday after Opposition MPs demanded a discussion on the Bihar SIR issue.

Proceedings began in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on day 11 of Monsoon session of Parliament.

INDIA bloc floor leaders met on Thursday at the office of the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Rajya Sabha to plan their strategy for the floor of the House. After the meeting, INDIA bloc MPs protested in the Parliament premises over the issue of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar,.

"...Talking about Uri surgical strikes..It was the first time after 1947 that the Indian PM came on record and said that the perpetrators of the (Uri) attack will not be spared...And within 3 days, surgical strikes were conducted and terror launching pads were destroyed...This is the changing India...See the political will in comparison to those who said that we will see what to do," Union Minister JP Nadda said in Rajya Sabha. 

JP Nadda addressed the Rajya Sabha on Operation Sindoor, saying, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi cut short his foreign trip soon after the Pahalgam attack took place and returned to India overnight to take stock of the security situation and the next planned steps."

"The entire truth will come out if PM Modi calls Trump a liar," Leader of Opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi alleged India is being pressured amid a trade deal between India and US.

During a special discussion on Operation, BJP National President and Union Minister, JP Nadda, will speak in the Rajya Sabha on 'Operation Sindoor' today at 3 PM, whereas the Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah will speak on Operation Sindoor in the Rajya Sabha post 4 PM. 

"The words used by PM Modi and EAM Dr S Jaishankar, if you carefully listen to them, they are 'gol-mol' words. Rahul Gandhi said yesterday as well, they should directly say that the American President is lying...,"Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said on US President Donald Trump's statement on ceasefire and tariffs.

"Main unko kehna chahta hoon, woh kaan kholke sun le. 22 April se 16 June tak, ek bhi phone call President Trump aur Prime Minister Modi ke beech mein nahi hua," EAM Jaishankar said during the discussion on Operation Sindoor.

While addressing the Rajya Sabha, EAM S Jaishankar said, “The Modi government has corrected the wrongs of Nehru's policies by suspending the Indus water treaty with Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack. The Indus Water Treaty will be held in abeyance until Pakistan irrevocably gives up its support of terrorism... Blood and water will not flow together..."

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar addressed the Rajya Sabha on Operation Sindoor, as the Rajya Sabha resumes proceedings with the discussion on India's strong, successful & decisive 'Operation Sindoor' in response to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam.

SIR Parliament Debate: On Opposition's protest over the SIR issue, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said, "Those who walk around with the Constitution in their hands are mocking the constitutional order the most. SIR is a system of the Election Commission and has been in force for decades. People oppose it for political reasons to serve their own interests. This is concerning and condemnable. Discussing SIR means you want a discussion against the EC. Can the Lok Sabha initiate a discussion on the EC? Those who do not understand the system of their constitution have no answer to this kind of argument." 

"SIR is an important proceeding that every government has done in the past. Even the Congress has done it 20-25 times. Why are they troubled over a constitutional work? The government is actually doing it for transparency," BJP MP Kangana Ranaut said on opposition protest against Bihar SIR. 

Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson and MP Sonia Gandhi joins the INDIA Bloc protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) outside the Parliament. 

Parliament's monsoon session proceedings will begin soon. The members of the INDIA Bloc stage a protest against the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls of Bihar. A special discussion on Operation Sindoor will take place in Rajya Sabha today, and EAM Jaishankar, Amit Shah and others are likely to take part.

"Yesterday, for the 28th time, US President Donald Trump has claimed that he has made the ceasefire possible...Why is PM Modi afraid to take Donald Trump's name in the Parliament? Why is he not ready to do this? It is the duty of PM Modi to make the statement in the Rajya Sabha that Donald Trump is lying," Congress MP Manickam Tagore said, as quoted by ANI.
