A Cessna 172 training aircraft operated by Redbird Flight Training Academy skidded while landing in Pune, officials said. The incident occurred seven months after a fatal Learjet crash involving Ajit Pawar in the same vicinity. Both occupants aboard the aircraft escaped without any serious injuries, Pune Superintendent of Police Sandip Singh Gill confirmed.

The police officials said that the crash occurred at around 12.30 pm. “The incident occurred near the airstrip. We are investigating whether the aircraft developed a technical snag or if there were any other technical problems. It is too early to comment on anything,” PTI reported.

How Did Pawar Die?

In January, Pawar had died along with four others after their Learjet 45 plane crashed near Baramati airport. The plane carrying the 66-year-old NCP leader, his personal security officer and attendant, as well as two cockpit crew, pilot-in-command Sumit Kapur and first officer Shambhavi Pathak, had crashed during its second landing attempt on January 28.

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), the accident, is expected to submit its final report by January 2027.

In a separate incident, another trainer aircraft of a private company had crashed at Baramati on May 13. No serious injuries were reported, and the trainee pilot, who was the sole occupant of the aircraft, escaped safely following the accident near Gojubavi village adjacent to the Baramati airstrip area.

A portion of the aircraft had hit an electric pole just before landing.

"As per initial information received from witnesses, the aircraft was flying at a comparatively low altitude when it developed a technical malfunction. During the crash landing, one side of the aircraft reportedly hit an electric pole before it struck the ground," PTI reported an officer as saying.
