A folk music event in Gujarat’s Junagadh district turned into a massive spectacle on Thursday night after devotees showered singers with piles of currency notes during a religious programme in Khambhalia village of Malia Hatina taluka. The event, organised as part of an ongoing Shrimad Bhagwat Saptah Gyan Yagna, drew huge crowds and has now gone viral on social media.

Popular folk artist, Gopal Sadhu, captivated the audience with their performances during the traditional dayra programme. As the music continued, attendees began throwing currency notes onto the stage in large numbers, eventually covering the performers under heaps of cash. Videos circulating online show notes of Rs 10, Rs 20, Rs 100 and Rs 500 raining down while the crowd cheered loudly.

The video became viral on social media, with netizens reacting with mixed views on the incident. "This is called true 'work from home'. Just sitting and getting drenched in the rain of notes," said one user, while another added, "I hope he can breathe properly. He is singing while they are adding the notes."

"Hopefully, some of this money is directed towards the welfare of the poor and needy. If I have said anything wrong, please forgive me," a user said.

While the tradition of showering money on folk singers during Gujarat’s dayra performances is not new, organisers said this event carried a larger social purpose. According to them, the money collected from the programme will be donated to educational initiatives after deducting administrative and event-related expenses.

The remaining amount will reportedly be handed over to the Ahir Charitable Trust, which plans to use the funds for girls’ education. Organisers said the trust aims to build the Gujarat Ahir Girls Hostel along with a modern educational campus in Ahmedabad to support higher education opportunities for girls.

The initiative has received widespread appreciation locally, with many praising the combination of cultural celebration and charitable contribution aimed at supporting education and the future of young girls.
