Tahawwur Rana Extradition LIVE Updates: NIA Seeks 20-Day Custody Of 26/11 Attacks Accused; Patiala House Court Reserves Order

The NIA has sought 20 days remand of 26/11 Mumbai attacks accused Tahawwur Rana during hearing at Patiala House Court, ANI reported.

26/11 Mumbai attacks accused Tahawwur Rana has been brought to Patiala House Court in Delhi. He arrived today in India, following extradition by the US.

Special NIA Judge Chanderjeet Singh reached Patiala House Court. He will preside over the proceedings on extradited terrorist Tahawwur Rana. There is a strong possibility that Tahawwur Rana will be physically presented in court.

Ahead of the production of 26/11 Mumbai attacks alleged mastermind Tahawwur Hussain Rana before Patiala House courts in the national capital, Delhi Police removed mediapersons and members of the public from the court premises, citing security concerns. While asking the mediapersons to leave, police said it was ensuring that the court premises was fully vacant. 

Advocate Piyush Sachdeva from Delhi Legal Services to represent 26/11 Mumbai attacks accused Tahawwur Rana. The advocate has arrived at Patiala House Court in Delhi.

Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde tweets, "Tahawwur Rana, the mastermind of 26/11 - the biggest terrorist attack on the country has been brought to India. For this, I wholeheartedly congratulate Prime Minister Narendra Modi. About a month ago, there was a discussion between Prime Minister Modi and US President Donald Trump. According to that, America transferred the biggest criminal of the country to India. I also congratulate EAM Dr S Jaishankar for this. There is no doubt that Tahawwur Rana, responsible for the attack on the world's largest democracy, will get severe punishment."

Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) legal team arrives at Patiala House Court. Senior advocate Dayan Krishnan reached the court along with his team.

The National Investigation Agency on Thursday said it has "successfully secured the extradition" of Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a key accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. In a statement, the NIA said the extradition happened after years of sustained and concerted efforts to bring the key conspirator behind the 2008 mayhem to justice.

"With the active assistance of USDoJ, the US Sky Marshal, NIA worked closely with other Indian intelligence agencies, NSG through the entire extradition process, which also saw India's Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Home Affairs coordinating with the other relevant authorities in the United States to take the matter to its successful conclusion", the statement read.

The Special Flight carrying 26/11 Mumbai Attacks plotter Tahawwur Rana on Thursday landed at the Palam Airport in Delhi. SWAT vehicles and BSF troops have been deployed across the area. Tahawwur Rana will reportedly be taken to the Patiala House Court from airport.  

As India prepares for the trial of Tahawwur Rana, the government has appointed Advocate Narendra Mann as the Special Public Prosecutor in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack case. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs announced his appointment through a gazette notification, stating that he will serve for three years or until the trial concludes, whichever comes first. Mann is a seasoned legal expert with a career spanning over three decades. After earning his LL.B. from Campus Law Centre, Delhi University (1987-1990) and a B. Com from Kirori Mal College (1984-1987), he enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1990 and has been actively practicing ever since.

"Our Bar Association will ensure that there should not be any disruption of law and order within the complex or disturbance in the judicial proceedings. Senior advocate Dayan Krishnan, who led India's arguments for the extradition of 26/11 accused Tahawwur Rana in a US court, is set to lead the National Investigation Agency's (NIA) prosecution in Delhi. Rana, a close associate of 26/11 main conspirator David Coleman Headley alias Daood Gilani, a US citizen, is learnt to be on his way to India after the US Supreme Court on April 4 dismissed his review plea against his extradition to India.

A heavy security force was deployed outside Palam Air Force Station in Delhi ahead of the arrival of the special plane carrying 26/11 terror attacks accused.

The special plane carrying the Mumbai terror attack accused landed in Delhi; the accused is set to be taken to the NIA office. 

Former Israeli Ambassador to India Daniel Carmon said that extradition of Rana is a great development, adding that Israel has always been with India in the fight against terrorism.

In its first reaction following Rana's extradition, Pakistan stated that the accused has no relations with Pak officials, adding that Rana is a Canadian.

Eknath Omble, brother of Ashok Chakra recipient Tukaram Omble, stated that Rana should be hanged, adding that the country will never forgive the culprits.

Maharashtra Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar stated that Tahawwur Rana should face capital punishment, adding that the matter should not be politically exploited.

RJD Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha stated that the country has not forgotten the barbaric attacks. He also said that an action should be taken against the economic fugitives too. 

In a post on the social media platform X, the BJP stated that there is no mercy for people trying to harm India. It stated that the culprits will be dealt with an iron fist. 

Union Minister Piyush Goyal praised Modi government for its efforts to bring back Tahawwur Rana from the US. He stated that the UPA government did nothing to punish the people involved in the Mumbai terror attacks.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi stated that Tahawwur Rana should be sentenced to death in front of the public. She stated that the crime that he had committed cannot be forgotten or forgiven. 

The officials stated that the JLN Metro Station Gate Number 2 will remain closed due to security reasons. They stated that the gate was closed as it is opposite to the NIA headquarters.
