Tamil Nadu’s politics has long blurred the line between cinema and governance. From MG Ramachandran (MGR) to J Jayalalithaa, and now Vijay, the state has repeatedly shown an unusual trust in film stars as political leaders.
This is not accidental. Cinema has always shaped public opinion in Tamil Nadu. People often credit actors to be larger-than-life figures and this has in many instances translated to political gain. MGR developed a fan base through moral hero roles in movies and eventually became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for consecutive terms from 1977 to 1987. He was also the founding member of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

Following MGR's death, late Jayalalithaa, popularly known as Amma, gained both his legacy and appeal among masses. The message was clear - popularity on screen can translate to electoral success.
The same did not happen with other stars. The immensely popular actor Rajinikanth withdrew from his political debut in 2021 due to health concerns. Superstar Kamal Haasan entered politics in 2018 and launched Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM). His party, however, struggled to gain hold in Tamil Nadu as it faced repeated poll defeats. This again showed that charisma alone is not enough, a strong political structure and ideology are also important.
Tamil Nadu election 2026 results show that the formula still holds if used the right way. Actor-turned-politician Vijay, known as Thalapathy among his fans, was an outsider to Dravidian politics. Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) success can be linked to his massive fan network, especially among young voters and an efficient use of social media that eventually converted popularity into votes.
The "Vijay effect" coupled with anti-incumbency ousted Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Despite MK Stalin’s effort to retain voter confidence, Vijay’s fresh face along with dissatisfaction towards existing leadership gave room for change in Tamil Nadu.
Vijay’s rise to power mirrors journeys of MGR and Jayalalithaa. Adapting to the current scene, the TVK chief also used social media mobilisation and youth-focussed messaging to his benefit. His success makes it clear that even though Tamil Nadu’s star culture continues, it still demands more than just screen presence.
