Tamil Nadu: One of the most significant announcements made by Vijay during his first address as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu was the decision to release a 'white paper' related to the state's finances under the previous Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government.

"After reviewing everything, I intend to release a white paper to the people. I want my government to be a transparent government," CM Vijay said.

"As far as Tamil Nadu is concerned, if I need to meet someone, I will not do it secretly or behind closed doors. Whatever I do, I will do openly and transparently," he added.

In his address, Vijay accused the previous DMK government of leaving the state with a debt burden of more than Rs 10 lakh crore.

"Today, the condition in which our Tamil Nadu government has been left is something I have seen for myself. The last government has gone out after borrowing debts of more than Rs 10 lakh crore. The treasury has been completely emptied before they left office," he said.

He further said, "I am not saying this for effect. Only after going inside and seeing things firsthand can one understand what is there and what is not."

Stalin Reacts To Vijay's First Speech

Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin pushed back against Vijay's claims that the state is facing a financial crisis, stating that Tamil Nadu's debt remains within the 'permissible limits'.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Stalin said, "The debt level of Tamil Nadu is within the permitted limits."

"Don't start saying straight away that the government has no money. It's all there. What's needed is the will to give it to the people and the ability to govern," he added.

Stalin emphasised that despite facing challenges, like the Covid-19 pandemic, floods, and what he described as 'neglect' from the central government led by the BJP, his government implemented several welfare schemes over the past five years.

Stalin further noted that his government had 'clearly explained' the financial status of the Tamil Nadu government in the February budget.

"Didn't you know that? It was only after that that you made so many promises to the people. Don't deceive the people who voted for you and try to divert the issue," he added.

Stalin said that as Vijay assumes new administrative responsibilities, he would eventually understand the challenges involved in governance and fulfilling electoral promises.

The DMK chief further congratulated Vijay on becoming the chief minister, stating, "I extend my heartfelt wishes to the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, leader of the victorious TVK, on assuming this responsibility."
