Following the defeat of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, which failed to clear the Lok Sabha on April 17 after the government failed to secure a two-thirds majority, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra shared a party-wise breakdown of current female representation in the 18th Lok Sabha.

Of the 75 women currently elected to the 18th Lok Sabha, accounting for approximately 14 per cent of the 543 members, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) holds the highest share. With 11 women among its 29 MPs, the TMC's female representation stands at 38 per cent, the highest among all major parties in the House.
Tamil Nadu's ruling party, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), ranks second, with three women out of its 22 MPs (13.60 per cent), followed by the Samajwadi Party (SP) in third with five women among its 37 MPs (13.50 per cent).
Among national parties, the Congress ranks fourth with 14 women among 99 its MPs (14.30 per cent), following the by-election victory of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from Wayanad in November 2024.
While the BJP maintains the highest absolute number of women in the House with 31 MPs, they account for 12.9 per cent of the party's total strength of 240 members.
This is the data shared by the TMC MP amid the ongoing debate over the implementation of the 2023 law, which mandates a 33 per cent quota for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

These are also the parties that Prime Minister Narendra Modi named in his address to the nation on April 18. Speaking a day after the Constitution Amendment) Bill was defeated, and the Prime Minister accused the Opposition of being "anti-women".
"I was deeply saddened to see, when this proposal for women's welfare was defeated, dynastic parties like the Congress, DMK, TMC, and Samajwadi Party were clapping with joy," he said.
