Tripura Student Attacked In Dehradun: The Tripura-based MBA student who was stabbed in a racist attack in Uttarakhand’s Dehradun offered the attackers to show ‘certificates’ to prove his nationality. Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student, succumbed to his injuries in the hospital on Friday after battling for life for more than 14 days.

The incident occurred on December 9 in the Selaqui area of the city when Anjel, with his brother, stepped out for a routine visit to the local market.

Anjel and his younger brother Michael were stopped by a group of men who allegedly hurled racial slurs at them. According to witnesses, the men called the brothers ‘Chinese’.

‘What Certificate Should I Show To Prove...’: Anjel Before Stabbing

The brothers tried to handle the situation calmly, reportedly telling the attackers that they were Indians, ‘We are not Chinese. We are Indians. What certificate should we show to prove that?’

However, the confrontation turned violent as men later attacked the brothers with knives while continuously hurling the racial slur.

Anjel suffered severe injuries to his neck and spine, while Michael was also injured and remains in serious condition. Anjel’s body was flown to Agartala on Saturday.

Anger In Tripura And Northeastern States

The racial killing of Anjel has triggered anger and grief in Tripura and across the northeastern states, as people from the region often face racial discrimination for their appearance resembling that of the Chinese.

Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, chairman of the Tipra Motha Party, who has been in touch with the family and assisting them, said, "It's tragic that the patriotic people of the northeast are called Chinese and attacked. Those who hurl racist slurs forget that it is because of the brave people of the northeast that China cannot enter the country. These incidents don't just hurt families. They divide our people. And when we are divided, we are vulnerable. We don't want that. We want justice."

Two Minor Among Five Arrested

Police said the case was registered on December 12 based on a complaint filed by Michael Chakma. Five of the six accused, including two juveniles, were arrested on December 14. The prime accused, Yagya Awasthi, is believed to have fled to Nepal.

Teams have been dispatched to trace him, and a reward of Rs 25,000 has been announced for information leading to his capture.
